Presenting to the Colorado Senate Language Access Advisory Board

Today, our CTO Jeffrey Shaul as part of his SAFE AI work, presented to the Language Access Advisory Board (LAAB), an interim committee of the Colorado General Assembly, made up of elected state representatives and senators.

Jeff presented alongside Dr. Holly Silvestri, who gave perspectives on spoken languages while Jeff gave perspectives on ASL. The LAAB is considering improving language access by including the use of automatic interpreting by artificial intelligence.

Some of the topics Jeff covered

• End-User Autonomy: Deaf users must have control over how AI is integrated into their interactions.

• Safety and Wellbeing: AI should improve safety for end-users by minimizing errors and maximizing positive outcomes.

• Transparency: The general public and end-users need to trust the quality and transparency of AI systems.

• Accountability: Companies must be accountable for any errors or harms that AI systems may cause.

At the hearing, we advocated for the use of emerging technologies to augment existing human solutions, rather than to automate them entirely.

You can read this old blog post to get a sense of the topics presented in full.
